Choosing Gratitude

Gratitude has a big job to do in us and our hearts. It is one of the chief ways that God infuses joy and resilience into the daily struggle of life. - Nancy Leigh DeMoss

Have you considered the antidote to the 8th Commandment—“You shall not steal”?

In 1967, Joni Eareackson Tada dove into Chesapeake Bay after misjudging the shallowness of the water and broke her back.  She became a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the shoulders down.  According to her autobiography, she experienced anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, and religious doubts during the next two years.  After learning to paint and write using her teeth, she has authored more than 40 books, including the foreword to Nancy Demoss’ Choosing Gratitude: Your Journey to Joy.

Tada notes that sadly, a lack of gratitude—and often ingratitude—resides in our hearts.  She explains that most of us are able to thank God for His grace, comfort, and sustaining power in a trial, but we don’t thank Him for the problem, just finding Him in it.  In Choosing Gratitude, Tada says, “You’ll discover that your affliction—that is, your ‘wheelchair,’ whatever it is—falls well within the overarching decrees of God.”
