Quiet Strength

People look at me and see a calm, cool guy on the sidelines and I want them to know that my Christian faith affects my coaching and everything I do. - Tony Dungy

In 2007-2008, I participated in NASA’s Leadership Development Program.  During the Program, our coaches encouraged me to “Be louder.  Make your voice heard.”  They were pushing for what Susan Cain calls “The Extrovert Ideal.”

Fortunately, I read Tony Dungy’s Quiet Strength when it came out in 2008.  Dungy’s book led me to question the advice I was receiving and helped me understand that different leadership styles can be effective.

That leads me to my ninth of ten leadership tips – “Inspire Others Your Way.”  At work, I’ve seen a variety of leadership styles work.  So, I try to encourage leaders to be themselves…play to your strengths.

I re-read Dungy’s book this summer, remembering his principles, practices, and priorities of a winning life.  The Super-Bowl Winning Coach explains that winning the Super Bowl is not the ultimate victory. It’s about the journey—the lives we can touch, the legacy we can leave, and the world we can change for the better.
