Dare Mighty Things

Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt

Over the last 45 years, August 26th has been celebrated as “Women’s Equality Day” to commemorate the 1920 certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote.

Women’s Equality Day calls attention to women’s continuing efforts toward full equality, so this is a good day to take a look at Dr. Halee Gray Scott’s Dare Mighty Things.  I met Dr. Scott at the Christian Leadership Alliance’s Leader2Leader facilitator training last November and quickly read her book.  I found that she offered great advice for Christian women leaders—both for today and tomorrow…

Teddy Roosevelt’s quote inspired her book’s title.  Roosevelt saw the impulse toward a comfortable life growing among the wealthy, and it concerned him, for he believed that genuine happiness, “the good life,” was found not in a life of comfort, free of struggle, but rather in a life that saw challenges as opportunities for personal growth.  Roosevelt knew intuitively what researchers are beginning to discover that the key to “the good life” — the kind of life that brings the most fulfillment and happiness — lies in taking on challenges and doing things that are risky.

I encourage you to learn more from Dr. Scott’s seven years of interviews with female Christian leaders.
