Last year, our church used Weekend Bible Study small groups to discuss James Bryan Smith’s The Good and Beautiful God. Through this book, Smith aims to help us discover the God Jesus revealed. As we consider the Third Commandment this month, it seems appropriate to focus on God’s character and how we can enhance our intimacy with God.
When Jesus was asked what the greatest of all the commandments was, he quoted from the book of Deuteronomy: “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the greatest and first commandment” (Matthew 22:37-38). In other words, the most important thing a human being does is to love God.
As the subtitle notes, Smith provides tools and ideas for “falling in love with the God Jesus knows.”
